Viewing of First Partial Solar Eclipse of the New Decade @ Singapore 15 Jan 2010
15 January 2010 marks the first solar eclipse of the new decade and the Science Centre Singapore and TASOS (The Astronomical Society of Singapore) will be organizing a host of astronomy activities on 15 Jan around this partial solar eclipse to commemorate the close of the IYA 2009.
Considered the longest annular solar eclipse of the Second Millennium, it will be visible from within a 300-km-wide track that traverses half the Earth. Here in Singapore, we will be able to view a partial solar eclipse that is set to happen between 3.30pm to 5.30pm and peak at about 4.20pm.
This day will also mark the closing of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009. IYA 2009 celebrates the 400th year anniversary of Galileo’s first public demonstration of his telescope, while January 2010 is the 400th year anniversary of his discovery of Jupiter’s four biggest moons.
The Science Centre will be giving away 3,000 free solar glasses to view the solar eclipse with. Visitors will also get to participate in onsite telescope viewing and DIY astronomy projects for kids and families such as to make one’s own pinhole eclipse viewer.
In addition, there will be live feeds from The Observatory for those who are unable to view the solar eclipse.
